Practical information
We’ve tried to collect information from the various channels of The Borderland, be it Phoenix Eye Camp FB group, Discord, Facebook channels, CODA etc, We got you.
All Phoenix Eye Camp info will be posted on these pages and updated prior, during and after The Burn.
Missing info? Let us know.
The Borderland is an incredibly intense experience. You’ll be venturing into the LA PLAYA where there are frequent dust storms. Your body and everything you own will be covered in the alkaline playa dust, all of the time. You will get bloody noses daily, your feet will get dry and crack, and you’ll be kept awake all night by thumping rave music.
And to top it all off, the only things that are available to purchase are ice and coffee. Preparing for The Borderland can be a daunting task. You’ll need to pack in anything and everything you will need for the week. It’s a scary thought, but don’t fret! The Borderland has a gifting culture and there are countless wonderful people who will help you out if you forget to pack anything.
THE BORDERLAND MAP

🗺 The Borderland map
A map over the entire area can be found here.
⛵️ The lakes in Alversjö
You can swim in the lakes. Yay! But with 3579 of us, we need to make sure that we don’t do any damage. So no washing in the lake with soap, shampoo or conditioner, not even with environmentally friendly soaps. If you wear glitter, make up, sunscreen or any kind of lotion; please rinse off before taking a swim. Note that only biodegradable glitter is allowed at the burn, but no glitter at all in the lakes. The lake is also a home to birds, insects and other living animals, please be aware that we are visitors in their home. And please take care of each other.
Don’t dive into the lake, or wear a helmet doing so! It might look deep, but it’s very shallow and rocky in some parts!
🏞 Farmers fields
Some areas are rented out to farmers, you are free to walk around the edges of the crop fields, but please do not walk through them.
MOOP (Matter Out Of Place) is not only frowned upon in the community. This year we have two new things to think about in regards to Leave No Trace. First off that cattle eat grass from the land and in the fields. It's extremely important that we clean all moop so the cattle don't get sick and die prematurely. Pieces from a single beer can can kill a cow if it gets into their food.
Second is that the legislation against microplastics has been made even stricter now. Don't use confetti and avoid glitter that isn't compostable even if there might be some left from last year, or if it is still legal where you come from.
🌳The nature reserve
A large nature reserve surrounds our land in Alversjö. It is the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) that is the owner and manager of the reserve. They have made walking paths and put up signs and benches that invites people to be in the nature reserve. If you are not on our land, you are most probably standing in the reserve. Please make sure you know where the border is!
We are not allowed to set up camps or build things in the nature reserve, only on our land. If we show that we can handle this well we might be able to do art installations and collaborations in the future that can gain both the reserve and our vision with Alversjö.
Do not make any changes in the reserve: no collecting of firewood, no moving of rocks. But please be there, and enjoy the nature. Look at the map to see which areas are nature reserve.
🌼Right of public access (Allemansrätten)
In Sweden Allemansrätten gives us the right to enjoy nature in certain ways. But it also come with some obligations. You can read more about it here
🦟Animals
Alversjö is home for a lot of animals. We have seen and heard many different birds, frogs and other small animals. Also traces from big animals like elk, dear, fox, boar and hare.
Mosquitoes show up in the evenings and in the forest during certain times of the year. The mosquitos carries no diseases.
Ticks are common in the area and can carry disease. Read more about how to protect yourself under Safety & Support.
There are a lot snails with a white shells at the land and dark mussels in the lake. Please don’t step on them and move them to a safe place if you see them.
There are different kind of snakes at the land and they are all protected. Just try to avoid them. The one with a zigzag pattern and a triangular head is venomous (Common Viper/Adder) but the black (Grass Snake) and shiny golden ones (Slow Worm) are not.

Let’s DREAM BIG together!
Last year, Phoenix Eye Camp realized three dreams:
*The Vortex Water Altar
*Wishing tree
*Quest board
Link to DREAMS BOARD
-
Knowing what to bring is not the easiest thing.
In a nutshell, bring your own everything! ”The playa provides” is kind of true - you’ll find people willing to gift you a meal, lend you a cup and even give you a place to sleep, should you need it and ask for it. But don't be that person, it's not cool to count on peoples good will to make it through the week. Make a packing list and bring what you need.
🎒 What to bring
*Your membership (on your phone or printed), and photo ID.
*Your Own Cup. Borderland is a BYOC event, meaning that you are supposed to bring and take responsibility for your own cup, bowl and cutlery. There will be participants offering you food or drinks and you will miss out without a cup!
*Sleeping gear like tent, sleeping bag, pillow and a comfy mattress. Alversjö is not a smooth camping area, your back will thank you if you bring a comfy mattress or hammock to sleep on.
*Weather appropriate clothes and shoes
*MOOP bag for your belt. You see Matter Out of Place, you pick it up. Easy peasy!
🏕️ What your camp should bring
If you’re free camping - make sure you bring, or have access to these things.
*Water bucket to put our fires, if possible.
*6 liter extinguisher and a First aid kit per camp.
*Shovel to clear your camp area. There will be a few hundred cows there before us (to cut the grass).
*Grass cutting equipment for the Nook and the Village areas not all the fields will be cleared by the cows, and the grass is very long in some areas.
*Water container for everyones daily needs.
*Transportation cart for refilling your water container.
*LNT-station to sort your trash.
*Food and kitchen
👜What you might want to bring
*Towel
*Camp shower or spray bottles and biodegradable soap - no washing yourself in the lake!
*Portable ash tray (if you smoke)
*Lights and spare batteries (headlamps can be useful)
*Sunscreen, preferebly eco-friendly
*Insect repellent, there will be mosquitoes and ticks
*Tick remover
*Required prescriptions or whatever else you need to maintain your health and comfort in a remote area with no services.
*Battery packs or solar bank for your individual electronic needs can be useful.
*Things to express yourself with like outfits, musical instruments, props, games, crafty stuff, decorations, fabrics, fairy lights and anything else you can think of that might make the experience more fun for you and your neighbours
*Gifts to give to new and old friends
*Extra snacks
*Intoxicating stuff. Some enjoy the Borderland sober, others not. If you want to be intoxicated then bring whatever you feel like, be it cigarettes, beer, liquor or anything else. If you can, also bring a little contribution to one of the communal bars that rely on everyones donations
⛔️ Leave at home
*High-power laser pointers. After a tragic blinding at Burning Man, they are not permitted at Burning Man or Borderland.
*Non-biodegradable glitter
🐕 Dogs
Dogs are allowed at Borderland, but please consider that bringing your dog means you are obligated to keep it on a leash at all times. And please be aware that loud music is our idea of a party, not the dog’s.
🚁 Drones
Drones are not permitted in the main area. But feel free to fly them in one of the unused fields if they meet these requirements.
🚯 Prepare to Leave No Trace (LNT)
Before you shop and pack, take a moment and think about the trace you might be leaving. With a bit of planning you can significantly reduce the MOOP* factor in your wardrobe, cosmetics, food-stuffs & camp décor (*MOOP = Matter Out Of Place = anything from trash to lost objects):
*Avoid costumes with things that could easily come off - sequins, feathers, rhinestones or beads might detach from your glorious gown and become sad plastic MOOP.
*Glitter is fun - but remember that shiny (non-biodegradable) glitter or jewel stickers are nothing else than moop-y (micro-)plastic once it is rubbed off your fabulous body. (Therefore, only bring biodegradable glitter!)
*Often, food-stuffs can be re-packaged before you come to reduce the amount of packaging waste on site.
*When decorating your camp or dream, consider that the wind might quickly turn those awesome space blankets, glitter-curtains or sweet little plastic-flowers into debris floating around on our precious planet.

Getting to Alversjö
You can drive, bike, train, bus or ride your unicorn 🦄 to Alversjö.
Address: Alversjö 8, 575 96 Eksjö
Entry to The Borderland is only allowed through the gate on the north side.
Ride share
Phoenix Eye Camp will setup a sheet for sharing rides
🚏Public transport
✈️The nearest reasonable airport is Gothenburg Airport (Landvetter).
🚂 Nearest train station is Alversjö 8, 575 96 Eksjö.
🚌 The nearest bus station to the land is called Allmänningen.
The local bus from Nässjö to Allmänningen takes only 15 min, but runs only every 2 hours or so. You might be able to gather some people to share a cab from Nässjö if you don't want to wait for the local bus.
* Cashless - Sweden is well advanced in the process of being cashless, meaning among other things that you won’t be able to pay with cash on public transportation, with the exception of cabs, in which case it’s suggested to ask the driver before getting on board.
* Apps - It is recommended by the carriers to download their app in order to book the ride before getting on board.
* Bikes - If you’re planning to bring your bike on public transportation check with the carrier beforehand.
To everyone wondering how to reach Borderland with public transport, https://resrobot.se is *the* Swedish public transit journey planner and it supports trips starting in and around Copenhagen as well. It's a much better option than using Google Maps for public transit journey.

🌞 Arrival day
Arrivals before Monday the 24th should not rely on toilets, electricity or communal water being up and running.
🚘 Driving in Alversjö
Car use is heavily restricted. You will have access to the parking lot 24/7.
Access to the site however will only be for 1 hour max on Saturday 22nd, Sunday 23rd, Monday 24th, from 09.00 to 21.00 (out by 22.00), and again from Sunday 30rd. After those times and dates, the gate will be closed and you won’t be able to access the site (exceptions for live-in vehicles, infrastructure/utilities, emergencies & people with need for particular assistance). The one hour rule does not apply to vehicles used as living space, please check at the gate if you’re one of those.
You will need to go in and quickly unpack (please greet your friends either before or after you come in with your car) and go back out to the parking lot, maximum 1 hour but faster is better! Drive safely regardless!
You will need to have a Borderland Car Identity card filled, with your name, contact info, camp. Please leave it in a visible spot behind your windshield even when on the parking lot (like a parking ticket). You can download the card HERE.
If you don’t have your identity card filled before arriving, you will be chastised, punished, and given one to fill in on the spot.
Please consider drivability - many of the roads are rather paths and not well suited for cars (especially if it rains). We suggest to park you car first in the parking lot, check out the way to your camp site, and assess whether it is drivable, before getting stuck. Also NEVER EVER PARK ON A FIRE ROAD (all pink & red lines on the map below are fire roads!
🚌 Buses and other large vehicles on a narrow road
The dirt road to Alversjö is quite narrow for large vehicles. Depending on the weather or traffic. The driver may want to drop you by the main road, where you’ll have a 2km walk before you can check in. You may want to coordinate with other to help with transportation of heavier items in a smaller vehicle.
There are 2 potential turning points for buses that are still being evaluated. There is one T intersection about halfway down the road that could be used for turning, and there is a similar intersection past the gate, which will not be accessible outside of check in hours.
If you come by bus, please contact The Threshold asap to coordinate (if you want to drive in towards the drop off zone down the road, we will need your estimated arrival time and you will need to call us ahead). For more information See also here.
🍷 Checking in
When you arrive to the Borderland, you are required to check yourself in at the Threshold. All co-creators must be registered members of The Borderland.
Bring ID and your QR code (membership certificate) to be able to check in (names must match!).
You can register and get your wristband from Saturday 13.00. The Threshold staff is on duty
* Saturday: 13.00-22.00
* Sunday & Monday: 9.00-22.00
* Tuesday - Saturday: 9.00-21.00
If you arrive later in the night, be sure to come get your wristband first thing in the morning.
Please make sure you have a borderland car identity card filled behind your windshield if you come with your vehicle.
🚙 Parking
Parking will be accessible 24/7. Please park your car in the parking lot, and nowhere else (not on the site, not on the road, etc.)
You will need to have a Borderland Car Identity card filled, with your name, contact info, camp. Please leave it in a visible spot behind your windshield (like a parking ticket). You can download the card HERE. If you don’t have your identity card filled before arriving, you will be chastised, punished, and given one to fill in on the spot. This is necessary because we might need you to move your vehicle.
We will help you park in a way that maximises space for everyone, please help us achieve that.
⛺️Setting up camp
Make sure you've checked the Placement Map and know your designated area to set up, and to make sure you don't take someone else’s spot. Read about placement here.
Fire roads must be kept free at all times and are 5 meters wide. To ensure fire response vehicles and ambulances can get to a camp quickly in case of emergency, camping is only allowed maximum 50 meters away from a fire road. They are all marked on the ground and on the Borderland Map.
A camp area is maximum 500m2. There needs to be 5m distance between different camps so after each 500m2 area there will be a 5m gap before the next area.
🚐 RVs, camper vans and caravans
* Campers and RVs are permitted anywhere except the Lowlands, just check the placement map first before you park. Some areas are not very suitable for RVs even if they are allowed there. Be prepared to be flexible!
* A 4m safety perimeter is required around all RVs and campers vans. Please respect this and follow the fire regulations!
* All caravans need to be facing the same way their tow hitch facing the fire road.
* All RVs, camper vans and caravans need a fire alarm installed
* Please plan to use the composting toilets in the area, as there will not be any spots to dump your chemical toilet at the land. Perhaps there is an RV campsite nearby with a dump spot, but you cannot drive around during the burn so when your RV-toilet is full, it’s full.
* A note on RV’s and power: Do not count on being able to run your AC and fridge on grid power
-
Water
There will be a main water station close to the well/clown hq, but there will also be three water tanks located at different places; It is strongly recommended for camps to have a rolling cart for retrieving water.
Avoid leaving water from the well standing still in the sun for a long period of time, as that might grow bacteria to unsafe levels.👾
🛀 Washing
Hair/body washing should be done at your camp and only with biodegradable soap; no showering facilities will be provided and washing in the lake is prohibited. Bathing without the use of soap, shampoo or conditioner is permitted. Also see the section Our new home - Alversjö for more information about the lakes. For individuals, 5 liter hand-pump spray bottles work great. If there’s any camp showers they need to have a solution for properly draining/eliminating grey water, read more below. If you don’t use biodegradable soap/shampoo you need to bring the grey water with you home.
♒️ Grey water
Consider what’s in the water before you pour it out in the nature, and biodegradable soap for both body and dishes. They need to be either Svanenmärkt or Ecolable. If the water is not ok then please bring it with you from Alversjö. Even when using biodegradable soap, you should dump grey water further than 50m from any natural water source like the lakes, streams or ditches. It’s important to not dispose grey water close to the well.
💩 Toilets
There will be toilet facilities located around the site (they will be indicated on the map). Only the 3 P’s should go in any toilet: Pee, Poop, Paper. NO wet wipes, tampons, plastic or any other objects.
If it wasn’t in your body, don’t put it in the potty. Items that aren’t human waste or toilet paper are not to be dropped in the compost toilets. We gift the poo to our friends the worms, and they are very picky with their food!
Do not use the forest as your toilet: It’s unacceptable during the burn with so many people. Human feces are toxic and can cause serious illness and pollute the groundwater. Please don’t poop anywhere other than the toilets provided!

📖JOMO-guide or What-Where-When Guide or FOMO-guide or just: Event guide
Online: https://coda.io/d/_dfYdkZZ8N-R/JOMO-Guide-2022_suDap
Just to let you know the SpacePort is planning to be some kind of (dis?)Information point for the burn, with a message board and hopefully big printed copies of the guide. And clearly lots of Port to keep the information flowing. (NOT UPDATED)
🍳 Cooking
You're in charge of your own cooking. You can use both gas cookers and electric stoves. Kitchen tents must keep a 5 meter distance to other structures.
💩 Toilet Temples
There will be toilet facilities located around the site (will be indicated on the map). Only the 3 Ps should go in any toilet: Pee, Poop, Paper. NO wet wipes, tampons, plastic or any other objects. Our compost toilets separate pee and poop, so please sit down to do your business while enjoying being part of a small compost factory.
Finally, we are dealing with our own shit. It will play a part in the well-being of various life-forms, and in that; turning you and your shit into a contributor to the local eco-system. Do not use the forest as your toilet: It’s unacceptable during the burn with so many people. Human faeces are toxic and can cause serious illness and pollute the groundwater. Please don’t poop or pee anywhere other than the toilets provided!
🌲 Leaving during the week
You are allowed to leave Borderland during the week. However, we advise you not to do so. When you leave, you pop your bubble, the weird little illusion that we manage to trap your brain in inside The Borderland. When people leave, it usually takes them time to get back in to the mood when they come back, which also affects others.
Put your full focus on living in our imaginary land for the whole week. You have 51 weeks a year to live in the default world. Plan to do your shopping before the event.
💬 Talk to people
Once you are here, you will quickly realise that people are very open, curious and friendly and even just passing by a stranger is often accompanied by eye-contact and smiles (also be prepared for many hugs;). You of course don’t have to stay within your own camp only, pick up some courage and say hello to people and you will be surprised what all emerges and whom you will get to know.
💌 Gifting
You will not be able to buy or sell anything at the Borderland. You will however find that people will want to give you gifts (ranging from a foot massage to a delicious cocktail), and you will quickly find that you want to do the same.
So before the event, take some time to think about what it is that you would like to gift. It can be anything from something drinkable/edible, to a thing you made, to a shoulder to cry on, to helping set something up, to a workshop or performance. The important thing is that you want to gift it and don’t expect anything in return.
Of course you are in your full right to politely decline gifts, and don't be sad if someone says "No thank you". Consent concerns gifting too, so never give without offering first.
👫Participate in workshops
There will be a lot of workshops and events during the week. Everything is organised by anyone who feels like it (yes, also you if you want!). This might vary from being a small group doing yoga, someone teaching contact impro dancing, a sensual laughter workshop, a shibari session or a syntheist mass....No subject is taboo at the Borderland.
The weeks before the Borderland people will start posting info about their events - keep track of anything that interests you. There will most likely be some kind of event guide accessible during the event.
🤡 Take a Clown Police shift
It is highly recommended to sign up for at least one shift as a Clown Police the first year you are at the Borderland. You will get a proper introduction before your shift, will meet many veteran burners that are more than happy to share their stories with you, and it gives you a perfect excuse to go around and talk to people. You won't regret it! Taking a shift the earlier days is the best, as you will meet people you wish you had met earlier...
🎉Sign up today!🎉

🧹Strike
The burn officially ends on the Sunday, please plan to pack down a fully remove your camp by the end of the day. Plan to do a moop sweep around your camp. The power grid will be turned off at 12.00 Sunday.
🗑 Prepare to Leave No Trace (LNT)
Before you shop and pack, take a moment and think about the trace you might be leaving. With a bit of planning you can significantly reduce the MOOP factor in your wardrobe, cosmetics, food stuff and camp decor. MOOP = Matter Out Of Place; anything from trash to lost objects. If it wasn’t there when we arrived, it doesn’t belong there. Pick it up.
* Avoid costumes with things that can easily come off - sequins, feathers, rhinestones or beads might detach from your glorious gown and become sad plastic MOOP.
* Glitter is fun - but remember that shiny (non-biodegradable) glitter or jewel stickers are nothing more than moop (micro-)plastic once it is rubbed off your fabulous body. Therefore, only bring biodegradable glitter - it looks even more wonderful on you!
* Often food-stuffs can be re-packaged before you arrive to reduce the amount of packaging waste on site.
* When decorating your camp or dream, consider that the wind might quickly turn those awesome space blankets, glitter curtains or sweet little plastic flowers into debris floating around on our precious planet.
Also: Plan for a good recycling system in your camp - also known as the “MOOP station”. The place to go to!
☑️ LNT cheat sheet
Reduce (don’t bring what you don’t need)
Reuse (give away left overs - or even better; make art out of it)
Recycle (what you can’t reuse)
Don’t let trash hit the ground - and especially: don’t let cigarette butts hit the ground. Bring one of these little folio thingies and put your cigarette butts in it.
If you see MOOP, please de-MOOP. Pick it up :-)
Pack in → pack out
🦄 MOOPicorns!
We adore, we WORSHIP moopicorns! Everybody loves someone who picks up MOOP, put it in the MOOP bag and take it to the trash station. In fact, we’re all supposed to do it. Every single Borderling takes part in keeping Alversjö beautiful and MOOP free. When we leave you’re not supposed to see we were ever there. So: sign up for a glorious moopicorn shift; it’s fun and a wonderful way to get around and meet all your long lost burner friends while doing something useful. And mother Nature will love you - same as we!
♻️Trash To Treasure
Howdy folks. This year’s Borderland @ Alversjö will be reinventing itself in the name of transforming trash into treasure.
We will not accept general trash.
But all of your well sorted trash, into the factions that you know and love…such as bio, construction wood, metal, glass, plastics…we will gracefully take off your hands. And the rest? You will be allowed the honor of bringing it all safely back home with you while leaving no trace of it 😊
Holy words from Darth Moop: Yes, there will be a Trash-to-Treasure Station with recycling containers available, but only for sorted recyclable waste:
* bio degradable (bags will be provided)
* cardboard (and tetrapak)
* glass
* metal
* plastics
* wood
* refundables swedish
* refundables danish
And **NOT for 'general waste'**. Only waste collected in **transparent plastic bags** is accepted, so don't use or bring the black ones.
A third thing is: Don't use any local people's resources when disposing of trash. Your plan cannot be to drive to the nearest town and fill a trash can/dumpster - that will get us unpopular with neighbors surprisingly fast.
Show communal effort and have a trash plan! :-).

Take your time to sleep. For several days. Sleep in. Take naps. Your body and mind will thank you.
Treat yourself with a nice meal.
Talk to your friends, share your stories, share the silliness but also the challenges and struggles.
Don‘t forget that you deserve a Hug. Or maybe also 123 Hugs. And cuddles. Lots of cuddles. Don‘t be shy to express this need, but please ask for consent before you interact.
Meditate, go for a walk, do yoga, body-relaxations, massage, TRE or simply just Breathe or Groan to let go of any bodily tension. Your body but also your mind will be grateful for it.
Up your Magnesium intake: Preferrably through a bath in MgCl or MgSO4 or if you can afford it go to a Float-Tank, cheaper version: Magnesium-Oil on your skin or Magnesium-Chelates orally
If you have used any toys adding the following to your diet will help your recovery:
* drinky toys: Vitamin B complex (Fish, Chicken, Eggs, Oats, Spinach, Nuts, Bananas), Omega-3-fatty-acids (Fish or Flaxseeds)
*herby toys: Black Pepper (tea), Vitamin C (Orange juice, citrus fruits etc.)
*happy toys: to break down: Vitamin C, to build new: Tryptophan (5 HTP, Cashews, Peanuts, Cacao, Milk, Some Cheeses)
*wakey toys: Vitamin C, clearing out the sinuses
*laughing toys: Vitamin B12 (Meat or Fish)
*disasociative toys: Plenty of Water, clearing out the sinuses, Vitamin B complex, Vit B12
*psycedelic toys: sleep

You might experience a little post burn blues in the days or weeks after a burn. This is very normal as we truly create a magical world where everything is possible, you feel the community everywhere and everyone is open to play.
Decompressions
It might be a bit rough to come back to “default world” in a city, to your job, non-sparkly clothes and not everyone wanting to hug you all the time. That’s what decompressions are for! This is normally a small event after a burn where we gather again, share our experiences and bring back a bit of the magic into our everyday life! Anyone can initiate a decom (yes, also you!), it could be a little picknick in a park, a party or even a weekend in a summerhouse....
And fear not, there will be many more burns coming your way!💫
